Gear ID honing tools
Nagel Gear ID (Internal Diameter) honing tools are specialized high-precision manufacturing instruments engineered by Nagel Precision to finish the internal bores of transmission gears, pinion gears, and other rotational parts.
Nagel Gear ID (Internal Diameter) honing tools are specialized high-precision manufacturing instruments engineered by Nagel Precision to finish the internal bores of transmission gears, pinion gears, and other rotational parts. These tooling setups focus on achieving sub-micron geometric accuracy (roundness, cylindricity) and establishing specific plateau surface finishes necessary for hydrodynamic lubrication.

Tooling Specifications & Core Concepts
- Multi-Stone Expansion Heads: Use multiple specialized abrasive sticks (diamond or CBN superabrasives) that expand radially against the inner wall. They are configured for standard reciprocating slots or narrow-type small bore configurations.
- Dual Expansion Spindles: Tool mechanisms allow both roughing and finishing cycles within a single spindle. The coarser stones rapidly correct raw heat-treat distortions, while the secondary expansion utilizes fine stones to achieve a precise micro-finish.
- Integrated Air Gauging: Honing heads are built with Nagel Air Measuring Devices. This design transforms the honing tool into a real-time tracking inspection probe, measuring shape deviations and initiating automatic tool-wear compensation.
- Precidor Single-Pass Tools: For compact dimensional ranges (typically between 4mm and 50mm diameters), Nagel implements Precidor mandrels (such as the DAL-E series). These tools can adjust diameters directly and pass through the bore in a single stroke to replace traditional reaming.
Gear ID honing tool Features
- Integrated Air-Gauging Systems: In-process pneumatic measuring nozzles monitor and regulate bore shape deviations in real time.
- Dual-Expansion Tooling Spindles: The tool supports simultaneous mounting of roughing and finishing abrasives on a single spindle.
- Automatic Tool Wear Compensation: Mechanical or hydraulic servo-controlled feedback loops adjust for stone wear automatically.
- Highly Adaptable Modular Designs: Basic tooling configurations adjust across large diameter ranges to fit multiple gear variations.
- In-Process Form Correction Tracking: Systems automatically check for taper or cylindricity errors to self-correct during the active stroke cycle.
